.After being subjected to Chris Berman’s amateurish commentary as host of ESPN/ABC coverage of the British Open a couple of years ago, I didn’t think his involvement in golf could get any worse. Now that I’ve watched the first round of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, I realize I was wrong.
Berman’s commentary during the Open Championship (worn-out cliches and misidentified golfers) was like listening to a 25-handicap weekend hacker doing television golf coverage for the first time. Now that I’ve seen him play the game, it turns out he IS that 25-handicap weekend hacker… although a 25 handicap might be generous. At least the likes of Ray Romano, Kevin Costner and George Lopez have game. “Boomer” looks like he picks up a club once a year. If Peter Kostis tried to break down Berman’s swing with the Konica/Minolta BizHub SwingVision Camera, Konica/Minolta would give up it’s sponsorship.
I’m not sure who’s idea it was to invite Berman to play the event. It’s not carried by ESPN/ABC. And he’s simply a bad golfer. It’s painful to watch and downright embarrassing. Somebody needs to keep Chris Berman as far away from golf as possible.
